ITA UW Campus Day – College Walking Tour & Student Exploration

By Liliana Teniente

On Friday, March 8, the Information Technology Academy hosted the program’s first ITA UW Campus Day for students to experience UW-Madison’s bustling campus in the height of the Spring semester. A total of 14 students from ITA Madison participated in the day-long walking tour to see the college campus in action and visit some of the best places to receive student services and foster community.

Students gathered at Memorial Union bright and early for breakfast and then walked over to the Red Gym for a tour of the Multicultural Student Center (MSC) led by MSC Operations Coordinator, Evelyn Mendoza. During the tour, students learned about the Identity Centers and multicultural programming that the MSC provides to affirm and celebrate diverse and intersectional identities of students of color.

The group then walked to the Humanities building to visit a student art gallery and participate in an impromptu tour of 4D art facilitated by Swan Scissors Ferraro where students embraced some art exploration. Afterward, ITA students made their way to an introductory Biology 101 lecture for an exciting class on the digestive system. ITA students also stayed after the lecture to meet and greet the Professor, Sharon Thoma, who welcomed our group.

After eating lunch at Memorial Union, ITA students got to take the 80 bus route to visit the Wendt Commons Makerspace and Engineering Hall with Collaboratory for Engineering Education and Teaching Excellence (CEETE) Director, Erica Hagen. ITA students were captivated by the innovative facilities shop and wide range of prototyping equipment that is largely run by the college students.

Finally, the group trekked to the Wisconsin School of Business to learn about leadership & engagement opportunities from current Business students, hear from the Admissions team about student resources, and visit the Business School’s Multicultural Center with the Center’s Directors, Arturo (Tito) Diaz and Natalie Arriage de Brooks.

ITA students had a blast during the UW Campus Day event thanks to all the UW-Madison partnerships with UW staff and faculty who made this possible!
